  Nursing care for pets
with partial or full paralysis

Pets suffering from partial or full paralysis due to back surgery or trauma present unique challenges to their owners.  Not only is physical rehabilitation an important consideration, but appropriate nursing care is vital to improve your pet's chances of healing and recovery. 

At Caring Canine Rehabilitation Center, our Nursing Care Consultations are ideally scheduled immediately following your pet's release from your neurologist's directly-supervised care .  Your pet's program is designed around the specific needs and goals of your individual pet, his/her condition, your home set-up and physical abilities.   Programs may include such items as:

     •  Expressi
ng the bladder / fecal elimination

  
  
•  Prevention of urine scald and fecal matting

     •  Rotation of body- timing, how to rotate with
you and
        
your pet's safety in mind

     •  Selection of appropriate bedding and props

     •  Handling your pet- how to pick up and carry, 
        appropriate support while walking, etc.

     •  Instruction in safe massage and range of motion
        
techniques

     •  Instruction in basic Tellington TTouch
®
techniques- calms stressed animals and aids in
        establishing a trusting relationship between the owner and pet

     •  Handling aids- referral to reliable resources, assistance in selecting and sizing for aids
        such as slings and carts

     •  Assistance with finding support groups


In addition to your home nursing care, Caring Canine Rehabilitation Center offers
the following services specifically aimed at pets with partial or full paralysis:

     •  Electrical Stimulation- decreases pain,
increases circulation to the traumatized
         area,
stimulates nerve
growth and innervation.  Another form of E-Stim that
         we offer is Pelvic Floor Stim.

     •  Ultrasound- increases circulation, reduces
localized swelling, relaxes muscle
         spasm,
stimulates healing

     •  Acupuncture- decreases pain, normalizes the flow of energy in the body
